Amazon recently introduced the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate review summaries for some of its product listings. This initiative aims to improve the shopping experience by quickly providing relevant information to customers who are in a hurry and don’t want to wade through lengthy reviews left by other buyers.
The existence of this feature was noticed by Mark Wieczorek, CTO of New York-based marketing agency Fortress Brand. He shared an example of an AI-generated summary, which includes a note saying:” AI-generated from customer feedback text” .
AI-based functionality being tested to summarize Amazon reviews
The AI-generated summary concerns an air purifier and highlights the positive comments from customers. He mentions that many customers have praised its ability to purify air and improve its quality, going so far as to consider it the best air purifier. Users also appreciate its silence and effectiveness in eliminating odors, as well as its elegant design. However, some customers have expressed mixed opinions about its effectiveness in reducing allergies and asthma.
Currently, AI-generated summaries are visible only on Amazon’s mobile site and for certain products.
Although Amazon has made any official announcement regarding this new feature, the company has already stated that it is investing significantly in generative AI across its business. It is to be hoped that this investment will also help combat the false reviews present on the platform.
With the buzz around recent advances in generative AI, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard chatbots, companies of all sizes are looking to re-engineer their businesses by exploiting the possibilities offered by this powerful technology.
Amazon’s interest in AI is also confirmed by several recent job offers. For example, the company is looking for a Senior Engineer in software development to improve its search process by offering an interactive conversational experience that allows users to answer questions about products, compare different options and receive personalized suggestions. This is reminiscent of the capabilities of chatbots like ChatGPT, which are capable of interacting in a very human way.
Amazon also plans to rearchitect and reinvent its search process using next-generation deep learning techniques on a large scale. Although the implementation date for these changes is not yet known, it is clear that the company is committed to deploying AI on a large scale across its online sales site.
