We’re not going to hide the fact that we were rather disappointed by this showcase. While we were promised announcements projecting us into next-gen, we were still treated to several cross-gen games, and announcements from independent publishers with games that, while nice, were far from what we’d expect from such a console.
In the batch we have notably trailers without gameplay or renders directly on PC but also remakes. There are, of course, a few mastodons for which we’ve already seen trailers and gameplays before, such as Final Fantasy XVI and Street Fighter 6. We won’t go into these titles here.
Here’s a small selection of trailers that have stood out from the crowd, or of games we’ve been waiting for. You’ll find the video of the entire Playstation showcase to give you an idea of all the announcements.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
After much pleading from fans, Capcom finally confirmed that it was working on Dragon’s Dogma 2 last year, but the announcement was unfortunately not accompanied by any gameplay footage. The wait for a first look at Dragon’s Dogma 2 finally came to an end today at the big PlayStation Showcase, and the game seems to be living up to fans’ expectations.
The new trailer for Dragon’s Dogma 2 gives a glimpse of the game’s vast open world, hard-hitting magical battles, plenty of strange creatures and a healthy dose of dramatic storytelling.
Spiderman 2
Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released later this year, but until now we hadn’t seen the long-awaited sequel in action. Thankfully, that finally changed at today’s PlayStation Showcase, as Sony shared a good chunk of Spider-Man 2’s gameplay, and it looks like the game will live up to expectations. A few moments seem to suggest that the PS5’s capabilities are finally being exploited, but the game remains cross-gen.
We already knew that Venom would be present in Spider-Man 2, but the first big reveal at the PlayStation Showcase is that you’ll be able to play as Peter Parker wearing the symbiote’s suit, who will eventually bond with Eddie Brock.
Phantom Blade 0
Here’s a new entry in the Phantom Blade series, whose first opus was a side-scrolling mobile game. The game was unveiled via an announcement and a gameplay trailer.
According to the trailer description, this is a “new action RPG with a deep, dark art style, fast-paced combat and a fictional world blending Chinese martial arts and steampunk!”. In this new title, players will embody a Dark Raider exiled by “The Order” and embark on a path of vengeance. On the PlayStation Blog, the studio behind the upcoming title has provided a few more details, including the setting in which it will take place.
Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2 features a co-protagonist, a brand-new character called Saga Anderson. She’s an FBI agent investigating a series of ritual murders in the small town of Bright Falls with the help of her colleague Alex Casey.
At the start of the game, players take control of Anderson; after certain events, Alan Wake will also become available, and players will be able to choose which story they want to tackle first.
Metal Gear Solid Delta (remake of MSG 3)
The remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 has been confirmed, under a somewhat strange new title: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Why Konami chose to change the title is not entirely clear at this stage.
The trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta focuses on numerous animals (ants, a frog, a bird and a crocodile) devouring each other in the jungle, and only confirms the presence of Snake and the game’s title at the very end. Although this is a strictly cinematic game, it would appear that a lot of money has been injected into this remake. Let’s hope that the gameplay will be just as impressive – we’re hoping for a new experience, not just a textural overhaul.
Resident Evil 4 VR Mode
The Resident Evil 4 festival continues, this time with the adaptation of the remake for the PSVR2 headset. The trailer shows us a few scenes from the beginning of the game and the arrival at the village. We then move on to a few seconds of gameplay.
